Anti-Skid Surface Treatment - Spectrum Ultragrip

Service: Anti-Skid

Design Brief

South Hams District Council had been notified of pedestrians slipping on the footbridge crossing the river Erme in Ivybridge. Upon our inspection, it was apparent the existing anti-slip surfacing applied to the timber deck was not performing due to wear and the icy conditions experienced in the preceding few days. QMS were asked to specify and install a suitable cold applied product that could be applied quickly to a timber deck, with fast cure capabilities and would keep the amount of time the bridge was closed to the absolute minimum. The material would have to be hard wearing, flexible and offer very good anti-slip properties.

Solution

Spectrum UltraGrip is a two component polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) based product which offers a mechanically resilient surface with 100% adhesion. It is weather resistant (UV, IR etc.), Alkali resistant, fast curing and flexible. Spectrum UltraGrip is used as a texture, anti-skid coating for walkways, crossings, cycle paths, disabled bays and many other similar types of projects. Can be applied to asphalt, concrete, timber and metal surfaces.

Installation

From the initial call from the client at 2pm, we had to organise material, plant, labour and sub-contractors to attend site the next morning. Our supply chain partner Jeff Williams Mobile Pressure Washing arrived at 6am to clean off the salt residue and loose materials from the surface. By 7am QMS were able to begin operations to dry, prepare and apply the anti-slip coating. The material is applied manually approximately 1.0mm to 1.20mm thick with a 4mm serrated squeegee and back rollered with a medium pile roller and left to cure for 15 to 20 minutes. All work was completed the same day and open to pedestrians from 2pm.

Product Details

Spectrum UltraGrip is available in blue, red, black, white, green, yellow and manufactured to the quality standard of ISO 9001. To give the anti-slip properties pedestrian grade bauxite is mixed within the coating before application and may be topped up (whilst still wet) with more bauxite after application by simply lightly broadcasting and rolling in.
