FAQ's

  • A thin paint system….how long will it last?

The system has been used throughout the world for many years. We have carried out extensive testing with the system over the past ten years in the UK through an independent materials laboratory and have test results in excess of 200mcd after 24 months.

  • Can QMS HyperLine™ be applied in urban areas?

We believe in promoting the use of various materials in different locations. The longitudinal road markings on a motorway or trunk road will not be subjected to the same level of abrasion as a busy traffic light junction in a city centre. We promote the use of Preformed Thermoplastic and Cold Applied Methyl Methacrylate systems together with conventional Screed Thermoplastic in urban areas. We do however have a yellow / deep cream waterborne paint system for the over marking of yellow lines, an ideal solution for minimising material build-up and potential drainage problems.

  • How quickly does it dry?

The dry time is comparable to Sprayed Thermoplastic ie. under 1 minute (depending on ambient temperature). After the initial dry time, the system can be trafficked with little risk of line tracking. The system continues to harden after the dry time until full cure has been reached after approximately 20 minutes.

  • Why is it so much more reflective than Thermoplastic?

The varying sizes of glass beads have a unique coating that works in tandem with the acrylic resin. When the two products come together they lock to each other eliminating "plucking out" of the glass beads through vehicle movement, a common cause of poor reflecting thermoplastic road markings.

  • What CO₂ Savings can we expect?

Compared to Sprayed Thermoplastic Marking Material we have achieved up to 81% saving in C02 emissions. For more detailed information please download our HyperLine™ Brochure.

  • Why is the HyperLine™ System so more environmentally friendly than Sprayed Thermoplastic?

The equipment used for the installation of the System is applied at an approximate rate of 10km/hour resulting in approximately 75% cost saving in Traffic Management costs (compared to sprayed thermoplastic). The fast application reduces time spent on the highway minimising disruption for the motorist and resulting in significant savings in C02 emissions. The base component of QMS HyperLine™ is Waterborne Acrylic Resin, which is solvent free and produces virtually zero VOCs. The two sizes of glass beads used in the system are produced from recycled glass that would otherwise have been destined for landfill.

  • Is it a Proven System?

Since the introduction of QMS HyperLine™ to the UK Highway Network in 2006, there have been no reported failures in performance, and literally millions of metres applied. QMS HyperLine™ has been successfully installed for the managing agents of the Highways Agency throughout the United Kingdom and on various DBFO contracts and Local Authority area Networks. Please contact us for further reference details.

  • How many parking spaces can I fit in my car park?

The standard size for a parking space is 2.4m x 4.8m. Between blocks of parking bays, you should allow 6m. These sizes can be reduced although this is not advised. We can measure your parking area and assist you in the design of your parking layout at no additional charge.

  • How many disabled parking spaces do I require to comply with the DDA?

DDA suggests 6% of the total parking area should be designated for Disabled Drivers.

  • What size is a disabled parking space?

  • What is Decorative Surfacing?

Decorative Surfacing is our terminology that covers surfacing applications that involve the use of clear resin technology and the use of recycled and natural aggregates to produce a stunning surface for roads, driveways and pedestrian areas.

  • What's the difference between Resin Bonded and Resin Bound Surfacing?

Resin Bonded Surfacing is a thin veneer surfacing system consisting of resin which is squeegeed to the tarmac or concrete surface and a suitable decorative aggregate hand scatter applied to the resin. Resulting in a highly textured exposed aggregate surface which is ideally suited to existing surfaces. Resin Bound Surfacing uses clear resin technology combined with beautiful natural or recycled aggregates. Similar in thickness to tarmac ranging from 12mm thick for light duty footpaths up to 25mm thick for roadways. The resin and aggregate are mixed together before application by hand trowelling to give a porous smooth texture similar to tarmac. Resin Bound is ideally suited to new surfaces where its porous attributes can be used to full advantage.

  • I've heard that resin bound systems do not need planning permission on new driveways, is this correct?

You should always check with your local planning office before any new work is to be carried out. Some Planning Authorities are making a SUD compliant system a requirement. The Government tasked the Environment Agency to reduce the amount of surface water run-off and as result they introduced Sustainable Urban Drainage System. All of our resin bound systems are Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUD) compliant and as such are permeable and allow surface water to egress back through to the natural water table.
